HOW IT WORKS
Solar Tubewell System
A solar tubewell system runs your agricultural motor directly from solar panels, usually through a VFD (variable frequency drive) that matches the motor’s speed to the sunlight available at any given moment. As sunlight increases through the morning, the motor speeds up; as it fades in the evening, the motor slows down and eventually stops, without needing a battery for most daytime irrigation schedules.
Sizing depends on your motor’s horsepower, the depth of your tubewell, and the flow rate you need. As a general industry rule of thumb, a solar array is typically sized to roughly 1.5 to 2 times the motor’s rated power in kW, to account for motor starting current and real-world efficiency losses. We confirm the exact sizing for your specific tubewell during the free site survey.
Best Suited For
- Farms currently running diesel generators for irrigation
- Tubewells with unreliable or costly grid electricity
- Daytime irrigation schedules that match solar generation
- Reducing long-term farm operating costs
- New tubewell installations planning for solar from day one
GENERAL SIZING GUIDANCE
Motor Horsepower to Solar Array (Rule of Thumb)
A general planning reference, not a quote. Your exact system size depends on tubewell depth, flow rate and local sunlight hours, confirmed during your free site survey.
| Motor Size | Approx. Motor Load | Typical Solar Array Range |
|---|---|---|
| 5 HP | ~3.7 kW | ~6-7.5 kW |
| 7.5 HP | ~5.6 kW | ~9-11 kW |
| 10 HP | ~7.5 kW | ~12-15 kW |
| 15 HP | ~11.2 kW | ~17-22 kW |
| 20 HP | ~15 kW | ~22-30 kW |

FAQ
Solar Tubewell System FAQ
Most daytime irrigation schedules don’t require a battery, since the VFD matches motor speed to available sunlight. A battery can be added if you need to run the motor outside daylight hours.
In most cases yes, depending on the existing motor type. We assess this during the free site survey.
Payback depends on your current diesel or electricity costs and how many hours a day you irrigate. We can estimate this for your specific farm during the site survey.
